Here's a question that someone might be able to shed some light on. While
reading through Darleen Pryd's dissertation (The Politics of Preaching in
14th c Naples: Robert d'Anjou and his sermons, p161 n 52), I came accross
a tangential reference to a discussion in a consistory of John 22 on the
baptism of images. (The year was 1320, the mss Vat Borg 348)
I've never heard of this practice? Does anyone know about it? Whether
image-baptisms were widely practiced and what the theological defense of
it was, or the functional purpose of it was?
Truth be told, this has nothing to do with my actual research. But I am
totally intrigued....
