The Victorians were fond of Eagle lecterns, in brass or wood.
A friend of mine, an Irish Catholic, dared to peep when a boy
through the window of a Protestant Church and was terrified to
see such an item, not knowing what it signified, and supposing
that Protestants worshipped some kind of Eagle God. I would
have thought the symbolism fairly obvious, but not so, evidently.
