- Eusebius describes the martyrdom of Marinus, a Caesarean
Christian who would not sacrifice to the emperor; Astyrius
was a Roman senator who took the body of Marinus away for
burial
* Emetrius and Chelidonius, martyrs (304)
- patrons of Santander
* Arthelais, virgin (c. 560?)
- a girl of Constantinople, she was a beauty who, in order
to escape the attentions of the emperor Justinian, wandered
through much of Europe until she reached Benevento, where
she prayed unceasingly and fasted every day except Sunday
until she died at the age of sixteen
* Non, or Nonnita (sixth century)
- according to Butler, she was violated by a local
chieftain and then gave birth to St David; while in labour
with David she left the impression of her hand on a stone
which was by her side
* Winwaloe or Guenole, abbot (sixth century)
- a Breton, who lived in a series of island monasteries
* Anselm of Nonantola, abbot (803)
- brother-in-law of the Lombard king Aistulf, he was a
soldier who founded two monasteries before joining one
himself
* Cunegund, widow (1033)
- her husband, St Henry (duke of Bavaria), doubted her
honesty once, at which time she volunteered to undergo an
ordeal by fire; she passed the ordeal unscathed, and after
Henry's death she became a nun
* Gervinus, abbot (1075)
- a collector of manuscripts, he suffered from leprosy the
last four years of his life
* Serlo, abbot of Gloucester (1104)
- a Norman, when appointed abbot there were only two adult
monks and eight young boys at Gloucester; by the time Serlo
died, there were more than a hundred professed
* Aelred of Rievaulx (1167)
- son of the hereditary priest of Hexham, he lived an
austere life as monk and then abbot of Rievaulx in
Yorkshire; as head of over three hundred monks, he was a
gentle leader, and wrote an interesting variety of works
(most of them published in English translation by Rozanne
Elder's Cistercian Publications)

- a Carmelite lay-brother, he spent much of his time
begging from door to door in the town of Vercelli
