The Frrench pinched our archives (and the Downside ones) in 1793:
they are still in Nancy, and Lille mainly.
I have the general impression that they were (and are) well
arrranged and looked after. But I suppose that would not stop a
Monsignor from shredding them. Religious archivists spend their
time trying to circumvent discretion: what may be jiucy now is
generally pretty dull if you leave it alone for long enough.
But I sympathise: indexing and arranging *never* happens at the
arrival rate.
