Cartographic Visualization: Some examples of a geographic perspective
----------------------------------------------------------------------
on exploratory data analysis
-----------------------------
by
JASON DYKES (University of Leicester)
Synopsis: Traditionally mapping has been a lengthy and expensive
process
resulting in a static product. Recent advances in computing technology
and speed mean that maps can be produced and changed with rapidity and
new
types of representation can be created that embrace extremely high
levels
of interaction between machine and user. Such cartographic
representations are particularly suitable for the iterative process of
visual exploratory analysis which some call 'visualization'. An
example
application that has been developed to demonstrate the visualization
of
enumerated data such as those collected in the UK Census of Population
will be presented.
Novel methods for combining quantitative and
qualitative spatial information are being applied to undergraduate
fieldwork. A software tool will be demonstrated that provides students
with a virtual environment comprising of linked geo-referenced
panoramic
photographs through a map-based interface to statistical and
qualitative
spatial data.
Place: Royal Statistical Society, 12 Errol St, London EC1 (nearest
underground stations are Old Street, Moorgate and Barbicam)
The meeting will start at 5pm on Wednesday 4 November, with tea at
4.30pm.
