Dear List Members
The Prime Minister today launched the National Grid for Learning at Trimdon
Village Junior School in his Sedgefield constituency. The first site he
visited was the Public Record Office's web site where he opened up
snapshots relating to the Trimdon Grange mining disaster in 1882. These can
be accessed at http://www.pro.gov.uk/education/snapshots/
The Trimdon Grange snapshots lead to a dozen images of historical documents
for pupils to investigate with the help of worksheets - either on-line or
printed out by teachers to use as hard copy in the classroom. The snapshots
have been created in partnership with the Durham County Record Office,
giving a national and local perspective, as encouraged by the History
National Curriculum.
The PRO plans to complete the structure of a 3D online education centre -
the Learning Curve - by March 1999, and will be filling it with 12-15
archive galleries over the next three years.
Many thanks to all involved
Caroline Shenton
