Visions of Ecstacy
Law November there was a discussion on the List about Nigel
Wingrove's 18 minute video about St. Teresa of Avila's fantasies.
The video had been refused a video by the British Board of Film
Classification on the ground that it was blasphemous, a refusal which
the European Court of Human Rights decided did not contravene the
European Convention on Human Rights.
Many contributors to the discussion asked exactly what the video
depicted. The best that anyone could up with were short summaries
from newspaper articles.
The decision of the Court of Human Rights has now been officially
reported in [1997] 24 European Human Rights Reports 1-38. The report
contains a very full description (I guess about 350 words) of the
video. If you do not have access to the report in hard copy (almost
certainly any UK university law library will have it), you can find
it on the Court's Web site at
http://www.dhcour.coe.fr/eng/WINGROVE.html
If there is sufficient demand from those who cannot get access (but I
not sure how there could be if your are reading this) I would be
prepared to scan the description and post it as a message to the list.
