Thanks for the interesting replies. Yes, of course the Irish were heaving
on missiological concerns, as we know from Bede. But I had always
concerned them the exception rather than the rule--perhaps incorrectly.
The example of Martin of Tours would suggest that the Irish alone were not
the only ones in the west who combine monastic and pastoral roles. Does
anyone know off hand where Cassian or Basil stand on this point? It's
been awhile since I've looked at either with an eye toward this.
