To the best of my memory, the Dominicans used the rule of Augustine,
which was used by canons regular. The canons had a more pastoral role
than did monks. (I just was an examiner on a dissertation about the
monks of Lanthony by Gloucester, who had some pastoral role in their
neighborhood.) Perhaps the Dominicans can be seen as arising in the
context of canons regular and then moving into a more mobile lifestyle
because of the preaching apostolate. I do note, however, in Tavuzzi's
book on Prierias, that a version of stability was maintained by the
Dominicans through keeping an affiliation with one's mother house.
