umm this rings a bell and I think you might want to consult a book by
Kemp, published in the 1940's???
also Pierre De Looz La Sociologie des Canonisations has an interesting
survey, which does however focus on the 12th c. onwards, though some of
the stats sets cover the earlier saints
might also want to look at works on church dedications (I think Allison
Binns from the early 1990's for England)
sorry these are scant references, but am not able to get into a database
for the next little while...
