Peter Armour's _Dante's Griffin and the History of the World, A Study of the
Earthly Paradise (Purgatorio, cantos xxix-xxxiii)_ (Oxford, 1989) has some
wonderful material on later medieval writers (mainly literary and political
thinkers, most notably, of course, Dante) who DID argue that Christ was a
Roman citizen who submitted to the lawful jurisdiction of the Empire, which
thus became an instrument of human salvation.
