`Changing competitive advantage and local urban governance'
This university-funded research studentship, to commence from 29th
September 1997 for three years (with expectation of award of PhD), aims
to critically examine strategies of entrepreneurial place marketing and
its impacts on local economic development. Presently, evidence of the
impacts of such inward investment strategies and city promotion exercises
is anecdotal, and this project will aim to specify the contribution of
such policies to successful economic and social regulation at the local
level, using the case study of Coventry. The successful candidate will be
expected to liase with the local authority and local business
organisations, including the recently-formed City Centre Team, to examine
the specific issues confronting a city with a `dismal' image
(`Lonely Planet Guide 1997') and an extremely `polarised' labour market.
Subsequent investigation could thus focus on changing forms of local
economic development, emerging modes of governance, the fractured
consumption of image, issues of local embeddedness, or issues of
political and social exclusion in the `entrepreneurial' city.
The studentship will be funded to a value of 5,500 sterling, with additional
financial opportunities through part-time teaching and demonstrating.
Further details are available from the directors of the project, Dr.
David Clark and Dr. Phil Hubbard, Geography Department, Coventry
