Apologies to all who have seen this on medfem-l. I am looking into the
posession of any and all versions of the Golden Legend in English nunneries.
David Bell's recent, and much appreciated, study "What Nuns Read" seems to
indicate that there is surprisingly little evidence of it being in nunnery
libraries. Many of the versions there, if the date is anything to go by, seem
to be the Gilte Legend (1438? English translation, not Caxton's 1483). Is this
a fair conclusion? Also, it is intriguing that this version contains the
"variant" or extended Life of Catherine of Alexandria, a life owned on its own
(seems to have circulated independantly). Does anyone have any suggestions of
where to go beyond Bel's list, Ker, and the usual suspects? Many thanks in
advance, Terry
