Dr Larrington,
Your mention of the Wife of Bath got me to thinking about the portrayal of
processions in Medieval literature. I don't know whether this fits in with
your original inquiry about precedence in Candlemas processions, but you might
wish to examine some of the better know literary accounts. The ones that come
most immediately to mind are allegorical procession in Dante's _Purgatorio_
(the last 3 or so Cantos), and the Grail processions in the _Conte del Graal_,
_Queste del Saint Graal_, _Parzival_, _Perdur_, etc.
