Talking with the computer people here in Nottingham, it is their
opinion that the vast majority of "virus alerts" floating around the
internet are in fact hoaxes (we had three come our way this
morning...)
It has yet to be shown if viruses can be transmitted in e-mail
messages (such as this), although it seems that they *can* be
transmitted in files sent by e-mail IF they are in certain formats
(Windows formats are apparently the most vulnerable): ordinary ASCII
files are (so far) safe.
If you download files from the web, it's a very good idea to run
everything through a good (and recently updated) virus checker; those
of you in Universities should be able to get an updated one from
your computer support people.
A belated happy Thanksgiving to my fellow countrymen,
jon
