Susan Einbinder's question about spitting reminded me of a message I
once caught from the medtextl discussion group. As Susan is
interested in Jewish/Christian parallels, this might be of interest
to her (and others). (But I still think the 'stinking' spittle
originates from somewhere else.)

We non-liturgists perhaps found the question about baptismal ritual
not so much too broad as too specific: I cannot even recall whether
there is enough material extant to reconstruct with any certainty
the specific practices of those cities at so early a period. In
default of a proper answer you might look at (alongside Kelly's
book mentioned by George Brown), the older works by Do"lger,
though you have probably already done so:
Franz Joseph Do"lger, "Despuere et exsufflare in der Da"monen-
beschwo"rung," _Antike und Christentum_ 3 (1932): 192-203.
_______________, _Der Exorzismus im altchristlichen Taufrituel_,
Studien zur Geschichte und Kultur des Altertums 3 (Paderborn, 1909).
And of course it never hurts to look at the bibliographies and source
lists in Cyrille Vogel's _Medieval Liturgy: An Introduction to the
Sources_ (Washington, D.C.: Pastoral Press, 1986), as well as the
convenient collections by E.C. Whitaker, _Documents of the Baptismal
Liturgy_, 2nd ed. (London, 1970); Edmond Marte\ne, _Die antiquis
ecclesiae ritibus libri tres_ (Venice, 1763), I.1.viii-xiv ("Ritus
instituendi catechumeni"); and even J.M.Neale, _The Ancient Liturgies
of the Gallican Church...together with Parallel Passages from the Roman,
Ambrosian, and Mozarabic Rites (London, 1855; rpt. London, 1970).
