Fra Pacifico's vision of St. Francis with the Tau cross on his forehead
appears in cycles of the saint's life very rarely, or so it would seem.
I read D. Vorreux, "Un symbole franciscain Le Tau" (Paris, 1977) quite a
while ago, and don't recall if the book was illustrated or not, but I have
not noted in it the particular representation of the scene mentioned in
Kaftal's Tuscan volume of the Saints in Italian Art (cols.388-89)--workshop
of Spinello Aretino (late 14thc.) in the cloister of S.Croce, Florence.
Does anyone know where I might find this scene reproduced? (I have not yet
checked "Bibliotheca Sanctorum"). (a.) Is there a complete corpus of the
art in S.Croce? (b.) Is there a book devoted to Spinello Aretino which
includes even the items produced by his assistants?
