I was sure that this was a late classical device and had an origina in
Macrobius or Boethius, but in my office I hae available only a few
standard reference books (like the OCD) and the shreds of a classical
education, which are insufficient to the question! But I do think that if
you look at the Consolation of Philosophy, you'll get a line on Fortune
and her wheel.
