Okay. I looked it up. We are both off the mark. The monk wandering in
the desert sees a shadowy figure and only gradually realizes that it is
human, a naked creature with white wooly hair growing only to the neck.
He goes in pursuit and nearly catches up with her but they are separated
by a torrent whereupon she turns away and says she cannot show herself
because she is a woman but will do so if he will give her his clothing to
hide her shame. He tosses some clothes (I presume not all of them) over
to her and she covers herself and then tells her story.
Presumably when alone in the desert she was reduced to a state which one
might interpret as purely spiritual or quasi-bestial, returning only to
her status as a human and indeed a woman when perceived by the stranger.
