Dear Brian:
I canīt say if your red face is the product of a 19th-century restauration,
as Rebecca suggest, but know any other examples of saints, angels and the
very same Trinity with their faces painted in blue and other colors. As far
as I Know very little has been written concerning this curious question. Try
A. PETZOLD, "His Face like Lightning": Colour as Signifier in
Representations of the Holy Women at the Tomb", Arte Medievale, VI (1992),
pp. 149-54 [Studies and explains the red faced angel in severals scenes of
the Three Marys at the Tomb]
