I would like to thank everyone who helped me with my question re
St. Hilary of Poitiers, the eucharist, Berengar of Tours and the Council
of Poitiers 1075. As is usual in this kind of inquiry, my research has led
to fruitful and unexpected results.
I have another question with which perhaps some list members
might be of help. At the time of the Berengar controversy, at the abbey of
St. Hilaire in Poitiers there resided a canon by the name of Magister
Hilarius. His name shows up in several charters and others have written
about him on this basis. In the Histoire Litteraire de France, the authors
also discuss Master Hilary as both a teacher of Gilbert de la Poree and as
the author of a sermon on the eucharist entitled De corpore et sanguine
Domini. The Histoire Litteraire du Poitou II, pp. 130-1 also makes note of
this work. According to these authors, the sermon of Master Hilary could
be found at one time at Lobbes, at Saint-Amand, and at the cathedral of
Saint-Omer. They also note that the work has been falsely attributed to
Saint Hilary of Poitiers (an impossibility, since the sermon cites St.
Augustine).
A perusal of Sanderus' work on 17th cent. Belgian mss (Bibliotheca
Belgica manuscripta-- 1641; rpt. Brussels, 1972) has yielded the following
results: p. 32-3-- the Saint-Amand ms; p. 300-- the Lobbes ms; and p. 319
the Saint-Omer ms.
For several years now I have from time to time searched in vain
for any one of theses ms. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to
how I might locate these ms? The work is not cited by any of the standard
authors on the Berengar controversy.
Feel free to reply on or off list.
