Dear John, dear Jessalynn,
As far as usury / heresy is concerned, I can only quote what I found
in CLCLT. It's a few verses from Rudolf of Liebegg's *Pastorale
novellum* (liber 4, cap. 21, versus 1669-71):
... nec ipse
Dispensat papa; non peccatum fore si quis
Affirmauerit hanc, uelut hereticus teneatur!
There must be more on this theme of "whoever claims that usury be no
sin, must be considered a heretic", - after all, Rudolf is merely
giving a versification of some current prose material.
As to John's question about episcopal inquisitions into heresy, you
might consider the following:
Nicole Beriou, 'Usure, credit, restitutions: un dossier inattendu
dans les manuscrits de Robert de Sorbon', in *Commerce, finances
et societe (XIe-XVIe siecles). Recueil de travaux d'Histoire
medievale offert a M. le Professeur Henri Dubois,* ed. by Philippe
Contamine, Thierry Dutour and Bertrand Schnerb, Cultures et
Civilisations medievales, 9 (Paris, 1984), pp. 135-56
Cheers,
Christoph
P.S.: Jessalynn, could you please post me your snail-mail address
once more? I accidentally deleted your last posting. /C.
