Research Outline
I am undertaking a long term research project into the history of Measham and
the Mease Valley up to 1300 AD.
Measham is some 20 miles north east of Birmingham. The Mease Valley runs from
west Leicestershire, through south Derbyshire and mets the River Trent in
east Staffordshire. The subjects I am researching include:
Roman Roads
I suspect that the Tamworth to Nottingham Road through Measham is a Roman
Road. I suspect that the route to be from the Watling Street to Sawley.
Salt Ways
Measham appears to be on a salt way which runs from the Trent Valley, through
Walton on Trent to Measham. I suspect it goes onto the Roman town at
Ravenstone.
Boundaries
Up until the 19th Century Measham's eastern parish boundary formed the
Leicestershire/Derbyshire boundary. I suspect that this may well reflect much
earlier boundaries.
Mercian History
As Measham is situated within the Tomasaetian's land I am very interested in
the development of the Mercian kingdom.
Danish Settlement
I believe the Danish of army of Derby was settled in the area around Measham.
Earldom of Chester
After the Norman conquest much of the land around Measham came under the
influence and control of the earls of Chester.
Other Roads
I believe I have discovered an ancient road from the Roman town at Ravenstone
towards Tamworth.
Religious Influence on Area
I believe there has been considerable religious influnce on the area of study,
from the early Mercian church based at Lichfield, Breedon on the Hill and
Repton to the establishment of late english monastic establishments such as
Burton on Trent Abbey and the Norman abbey at Merevale, Warwickshire. There
is also land owned and controlled in the area by the Knights Templer and
Hospitiers.
This is only a short description of my research to date. I have stored all my
data with in a database and so if you wish to know any information about this
area I am only too willing to assist.
