Today, 22 April, is the feast of ...
Soter, pope and martyr (174): Honoured as a martyr but no account of his
death has been preserved.
Epipodius and Alexander, martyrs (178)
Leonides, martyr (202): The father (origin) of Origen.
Caius, pope and martyr (296): According to a late tradition he was related
to the emperor Diocletian.
Agapitus I, pope (536): An upright guy who, according to Pope Gregory I,
"was a trumpet of the gospel and a herald of righteousness".
Theodore of Skyeon, bishop of Anastasiopolis (613)
Opportuna, abbess (770)
Wolfhelm, abbot (1091): In a letter addressed to the abbot of Gladbach
describing the errors of Berengarius, Wolfhelm wrote: "In order to see the
bread and wine, Berengarius uses the eyes of the body, but at the same
time he closes the eyes of the soul and so he does not see the body and
blood of the Lord."
Francis of Fabriano, Franciscan (1322): Unlike Andrew of Montereale (see
listing for 12 April) who never laughed, Francis of Fabriano was quite
jovial. In fact it is reported that he came into the world laughing
instead of crying.
Bartholomew of Cervere, martyr (1466): The Dominican priory of Savigliano
in Piedmont had three martyrs, all inquisitors. Bartholomew was one of
those three. His not-so-famous last words are recorded: "They call me
Bartholomew of Cervere, although I have never been in that place. But I am
going there today as an inquisitor, and there I shall die."
