Humphrey:
A very vague 'research project' enquiry. What are the intended date
parameters; language(s) - e.g. where bi-lingual items apply (either in
separate impressions or bound together); how to tell a 'used' atlas
(other than from remainder shops and/or rummaging second-hand/junk
stores/stalls) . . .?

Subject: Which are the most used/best selling world atlases?
We are doing a project on geographical names as used on maps, and feel
that simply counting the number of maps/atlases which use particular
names is simplistic: some atlases are clearly used more than others, and
so are more important/influential.
Does anyone know where we can find sales figures, or even just
estimates, for different atlases?
Can anyone suggest any other ways of getting data on “usage”.
Our main focus is on general reference atlases covering the whole world,
as used in schools and libraries, and as sometimes simply bought for
home use. We would be interested in sales data for other countries as
well as Britain, if anyone knows were it could be found.
Deepest thanks for any suggestions you have.
