medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi everyone,
I see a confusion about the name of this fresco and I would like to clarify it. In the Western Christianity we can talk about the Assumption of the Virgin, but in the Eastern, or Orthodox Christianity, about the Dormition of the Theotokos or the Dormition of the Mother of God. Theologically it is incorrect to mix those names up. It is incorrect to say the Dormition of the Virgin or the Assumption of the Theotokos. Wikipedia is not an academic reference, but there is a reasonable explanation about this here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dormition_of_the_Mother_of_God
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theotokos
I hope that this comment will be of help.
This fresco of the Dormition of the Theotokos is, indeed, very beautiful and still in a good state.
Best wishes to everyone,
Dragana
