Dear Tom
There is a clear reference measurement system in place for pH and NIST has reference materials for pH. Attached is the IUPAC recommendation for pH.
Within the Weqas Reference Lab, we use traceable calibrators for our pH meter used for monitoring pH of reagents prepared for our various reference measurements (one source from Fisher Scientific is: https://www.fishersci.co.uk/shop/products/fisher-scientific-traceable-color-coded-certified-reference-material-ph-buffers/p-6980012). So far UKAS have been happy with our approach for our ISO 17025 / ISO 15195 accreditation.
Additionally we are in the process of getting a pH EQA scheme developed. If you require further information, contact Gareth Davies at Weqas.
Regards
Dave

Subject: pH meter verification
Dear all,
We have a pH meter in the lab that we use to report the pH of biological fluids, mainly urine pH for urine acidification tests. We are in the process of replacing the pH meter and wanted to know how other labs verify a pH meter for use in the age of UKAS accreditation. For example, what do labs run as an IQC sample and does this reflect the testing matrix? What calibrators do labs use and are they a certified reference material? Are there any EQA schemes available for urine pH testing?
Best wishes, Tom Morris.
