Dear realist experts,
My PhD aims at understanding for/by whom, in which context and how interprofessional processes are implemented (or not). My setting = transitions between home & a short-stay inpatient care structure in Switzerland.
I used the “teacher-learner cycle” approach (through semi-structured individual interviews) to test initial theories (CMO's) with actors involved in interprofessional processes: patients & caregivers, GP’s, nurses and their immediate hierarchy.
Using the transcripts of the interviews, I have started “comparing” my initial CMO’s with what respondents have told me about them, i.e.
“unpacking” their statements into rows/columns in an Excel file to check how they confirm, contradict or adjust the initial CMO’s, or suggest new CMO's. This is how I understood I should proceed, after reading realist evaluation textbooks, published studies and protocols.
However, I do not feel confident (intellectually & practically) with what I am doing with my data:
1. How should this method be called? Content analysis (-+ iterative)?
Thematic analysis? Realist content analysis? Realist thematic analysis?
Other ?
2. What are the very practical steps of this method ? Publications report using tools such as Excel or Nvivo, but this does not really help me confirm whether my method is indeed coherent with realist procedures.
Would anybody be ready to share with me some of her/his experience / material? How it looks like? I would be happy to share mine as well (in French).
Many thanks in advance & my best,
Séverine
