Dear Xavier,
Thank you very much for your kind message. It was indeed a terrible tragedy. As far as I know, the Porifera along with the Tunicata collections were fortunately not affected by the fire, as they are located in the basement. The Tunicata collection of the MNRJ is not very expressive, but the Porifera collection is certainly one of the most important in the world, being curated by Eduardo Hajdu and Guilherme Muricy. Part of the invertebrates collections were lost, and some important material, such as Mollusca types were rescued with the aid of the museum staff while the fire was still raging. The documents, recordings of extinct indigenous languages, objects and most of the work in history and anthropology didn’t have the same luck and were consumed by the fire.
Best wishes,
Tito
