Paul,
I thought it might be worth trying a newer version of Xvnc. That
makes it worse.
$ cat /tmp/fsleyes-vnc.txt
With Xvnc TigerVNC 1.6.0 - built Dec 24 2015 16:05:46
$ fsleyes
08:38:30: Debug: Adding duplicate image handler for 'Windows bitmap file'
/usr/local/fsl-5.0.11/bin/FSLeyes/notebook/notebookapp.py:46:
DeprecationWarning: zmq.eventloop.ioloop is deprecated in pyzmq 17.
pyzmq now works with default tornado and asyncio eventloops.
ioloop.install()
and I get a mostly functional fsleyes that will open a .nii 4d series,
display volumes, and manually walk through them.
However when I instead use the newer Xvnc,
With Xvnc TigerVNC 1.9.0 - built Jul 16 2018 14:18:04

Not sure whether that is of any help or not.
