Dear all,
The Formal Theory Study Group (FTSG) invites postgraduates and early career researchers to attend our next study day, hosted at the University of Oxford on Saturday 3rd November. The study day will run from 11am to 5pm. There are a limited number of travel bursaries available for attendees based in the UK and the day itself is completely free. The study day aims to not only provide a space in which to discuss the latest developments in formal theory, but also an opportunity to meet other musicologists at the start of their careers.
The day will consist of:
1. A reading discussion group
In advance of our meeting, we will read two (or more) chapters from Beethoven's Tempest sonata: perspectives of analysis and performance, edited by Pieter Bergé, Jeroen D'Hoe and William E. Caplin. We will send pdfs of the chapters in advance of the study day.
2. Case study analysis
In relation to the reading, we will analyse analyse and compare Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 13 and Piano Sonata No. 22, Op. 54 and discuss our different interpretations.
3. Writing club
All attendees will have the opportunity to bring their work to discuss with other attendees and receive friendly feedback. Your work does not need to be close to completion – first drafts are welcome!
Please register your interest in attending and whether you would like to apply for a travel bursary by emailing [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Please visit http://www.sma.ac.uk/grants/travel/ for more details.
We look forward to meeting you in November!
Best wishes,
The FTSG Committee
