Dear Martin,
The list goes through ups and downs. We have had rich moments, and we have had thin moments. Things have been thin since the sad events on the list last year … There are nevertheless 3,000 or so people who read the list with interest. The fact that so few participate may turn around again.
People often learn from their disagreements with each other.
Together with Steve Clay of Granary Books, I am editing a collection writings by the late Dick Higgins for Siglio Press. In my introduction, I wrote, “Dick Higgins was a model of everything one may aspire to be as an intellectual, as a person of dignity. It was never necessary to agree with Dick on everything for this to be the case. That’s not the role of a model. When minds meet in difference, they learn and grow as much or more than when they meet in similarity. That’s one of the things we loved best about Dick Higgins. He cherished the life of the mind. It was always possible to debate freely with Dick, trading ideas, sources, and suggestions for reading and thoughts for the next debate. Higgins played this role in many lives, because he cherished the life of the mind and the life of ideas.”
This is how I feel when we debate, even though we sometimes disagree.
IMHO, Terry has never learned how to engage in reasoned debate. I am sorry for it. But there are serious and interesting people on this list — and you are one of them.
It is my hope that you do not figure out how to unsubscribe: I value your participation on those occasions when we agree, and on those occasions when we do not. I observe that you ask some of the best and most useful questions on the PhD-Design list. (If you recall, you raised such good questions about Nick Sousanis’s Unflattening that it took me three months to study up and write my reply.)
Please, Martin: Stick around.
Yours,
Ken
