Dear Danielle,
Perhaps you already know all about this but there are many theories
originating from Science and Technology Studies that try to go beyond these
dichotomies. Whether they succeed or not is of course up for judgement.
Actor Network Theory and its off-shoots are particularly interesting. There
is a lot of talk about design and designers, but they do not use these
words explicitly, at least most of the time (there are interesting ANT
applications in design,too).
I can give more specific suggestions if you have not considered STS based
approaches.
