Dear Colleagues,
Along with my co-conveners Eric Kirby and Nadine McQuarrie, I would like to solicit abstract submissions to GSA annual meeting technical session T182, The Cenozoic evolution of Tibet—How do we unify seemingly contradictory evidence?
Over the past decade, our understanding of when the Tibetan Plateau attained its great height and spatial extent has shifted dramatically. Early suggestions that most of the high topography developed in, or subsequent to, Miocene time and was thus linked to intensification of the Indian Monsoon have been challenged by mounting evidence that significant regions of high topography were established by Eocene-Paleocene time. In the wake of these shifting perspectives, how do we reconcile purported linkages between climate and topography? To what degree do changes in the intensity of monsoonal circulation reflect growth of topography? What processes drove widespread incision along deep canyons in eastern Tibet during the late Miocene? What are the geodynamic implications of plateau growth during Eocene time?
We’d really like the session to be “big tent” in nature and therefore welcome diverse contributions on the Cenozoic evolution of Tibet from every corner of the Earth sciences such as atmospheric and geodynamic modeling, geophysics, proxy-based observations of Earth surface conditions, thermochronology, geomorphic analysis and more.
Our invited speakers for the session have all published provocative articles within the last couple of years:
Miquela Ingalls (U. Colorado Boulder)
Junsheng Nie (Lanzhou University)
Loraine Gourbet (ETH Zurich)
Abstracts are due on 14 August 2018. The following link leads directly to the confex submission portal for session T182:

Hope to see you in Indy!
All the best,
Greg Hoke
