I would like to draw your attention on the research associate position (3 years) available at the Université de Pau Pays de l’Adour, on the thematic of mineralogical replacement in carbonate reservoirs. If you or somebody you know could be interested, please disseminate this information.
Scientific context
Mineralogical replacement is a complex phenomenon that affects rocks at various temperature and pressure conditions : replacement can alter the porosity and mechanical behaviour of rocks in sedimentary basins, in metamorphic environments, and under atmospheric conditions. Replacement leads to changes in fluid flow properties or structural integrity that can have dramatic consequences for geo-resources exploration, exploitation, and also for civil engineering. An economically significant example of fluid-mediated pseudomorphic replacement in the diagenetic domain is dolomitization. This project aims at understand what mechanisms impact the extension of a dolomite geobody. Especially, a focus on the processes driving the replacement at the grain-scale should be investigated.
Responsabilities
The postdoctoral researcher will develop experimental setups for mineralogical replacement analogous to dolomitization (single and poly-grain), using the X-ray micro-tomographic imaging facility at the host laboratory to characterize porosity creation and replacement front propagation. Results will be compared to the replacement and deformation patterns observed in natural dolomites geobodies (France, Spain), characterized by the postdoctoral researcher on the field and in the lab (microscopy, XCT, SEM).
The ideal candidate must have a PhD in earth sciences, with a strong emphasis on mineralogical replacement, and a solid experience in either field work, micro-analytical observation techniques, and/or experimental development. Abilities to work independently and to be part of a team are expected from the applicant, and demonstrated capability to communicate results through scientific journals and conferences.
The successful candidate will be part of the Laboratoire des Fluides Complexes et leurs Réservoirs, located on the campus of Pau. The postdoctoral researcher will reinforce an existing project led by Dr. Nicolas Beaudoin and supported by e2s (https://e2s-uppa.eu/en/index.html). The research will be conducted in close collaboration with structural geologists, mineralogists and geomechanics experts. Mandatory teaching (64 h/year) is included in the position. The appointment can start as soon as September 2018, is funded for 3 years with an annual gross salary of 34k€/ year.
About the host laboratory
The Laboratoire des Fluides Complexes et leurs Réservoirs (https://lfc.univ-pau.fr/fr/index.html) has a recognized expertise ranging from chemo-physics of interfaces, rock mechanics, geophysics, geology of reservoir rocks and thermodynamics. LCFR is an UMR with an industrial label, jointly supervised by the UPPA, CNRS, and the company Total. Researchers at LFCR mainly study georesources problematics, embedded in the societal and economical local environment.
