Dear Chuck and Jack,
thanks for sharing links to your writing...
I very much appreciate finding such thorough and thoughtful writing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory in relation to design. I'm very curious about the potential of this topic for further exploration.
I have nothing as fully considered or developed to offer! Though I did explore using Metaphors of Translation (from within linguistics) as a framework for developing generative design strategies for creating experimental type design... both within my research and as a prompt in teaching. Some of my writing about this can be found here: https://www.academia.edu/32199350/Exploring_interpretation_as_a_creative_strategy_within_type_design

I look forward to reading further into both of your research.
Best regards, Caroline.

Jack,
Thank you very much for directing me to your dissertation. It is a very impressive, thorough and creative work that I will need time to study.
I have only just reconnected with ideas that you have studied, articulated, and applied so well. I look forward to delving into what you have written.
My dissertation written many years ago is still guiding my thoughts concerning design thinking and my efforts to find bridges to how the mind works in creative, practical ways. My papers at independent.academia.edu/charlesburnette <http://independent.academia.edu/charlesburnette> especially Issues Assumptions and Components…, the MID graduate curriculum ... and the website, idesignthinking.com <http://idesignthinking.com/>, suggest some ideas in A Theory of Design Thinking, the framework I work through that is now turning to the issues you have researched and applied so well. I too am delighted to see the design world turn toward processes that are humanistic, and artful as well as practical and personal.
Please keep me posted on your work. From now on I will be sure to reference it.
Thank you again,
Chuck

Dear Chuck,
I was so happy to see your paper! When I presented at IEEEVis in Paris, a couple of years ago- I went to a panel with Collin Ware and other design notables. I asked them if they knew of vis designers using the principles of CMT and Blending Theory- Collin and the rest of the panel said no- but what a great idea! I asked many people I met at the conference if they had used these mapping principles; surprisingly, I did not connect with anyone who had. So, it is gratifying to see that the times are changing. I have 30 years of visualizing music , which is how I developed multiple ideas, including 3 comprehensive color systems that are able to carry complex information in embodied ways that are comprehensible to humans who know about the 12 step color wheel (which you probably learned about in kindergarten).
To see much of this work you can go to the website for Intermedia Projects Inc at http://intermediaprojects.org/ but a good index page for many works is http://intermediaprojects.org/pages/UrForSale.html It will take you to the development of my work with Kurt Schwitters’ Ursonate and more: Debussy’s Nuages, Bach’s Ein fest Burg its unser Gott, BWV 80, and the Gridjam. There is more- coming- 10 years of visualization all of the themes in Bruckners Eighth Symphony and Stravinsky’s Sym in 3 movements- These are still at www.jackox.net-<http://www.jackox.net-> but soon, new pages will be up on intermediaprojects.org.
All of the algorithmic techniques I developed for visualizing music can be adapted to other design problems. And all of my systems can be theoretically explained by CMT and BT. I was very happy to learn that I was not developing something new- but rather- I had my finger in the air- I was doing what Lakoff, Johnson, Turner and Faulconnier were writing about theoretically. How sad I was to learn that I never met Fauconnier while developing these ideas during my MFA studies at UC San Diego in the mid-70s. Maybe I was just absorbing them through the rich campus atmosphere.
Thank you for you kind message!
Jack
