General information
More than a school, Université Laval is an entire community in the heart of Quebec City, a complete university recognized for its culture of excellence both in teaching and research.
PRODUCT DESIGN
Our product design program provides solid training in product development (from design to manufacture) as well as the implementation of services that supports them. It promotes a thorough knowledge of manufacturing processes, environmental, social, economic, ethical and aesthetic considerations in product development. The program aims to develop a strong empathic attitude towards the human problems involved in design.
Product design is entrepreneurial in nature, as it offers new products and/or services that are often the basis for innovative and particularly fruitful business strategies. Thus, an important feature of the program is the integration of competence in terms of user knowledge (ethnographic design) and management/entrepreneurship. The program thus aims to develop relevant and responsible contributions to the development of society.
SCHOOL OF DESIGN
The bachelor’s degree in product design is attached to the School of Design, which also offers undergraduate and graduate programs in 2D-3D animation, graphic design, interaction design and design and entrepreneurship. Facilities include state-of-the-art workshops and laboratories with the School of Art.
Located in the heart of the Saint-Roch neighbourhood in historic Quebec City, the School of Design offers an inspiring working environment, in interaction with networks and technological, artistic and cultural partners: artist centres, galleries, workshops and theatres.
FIELD OF SPECIALIZATION
The bachelor’s program in product design is structured around five domains of knowledge.
1. Design, i. e. the knowledge of the design and design thinking culture, its foundations and related concepts in the creation, production, manufacture and consumption of products and services.
2. Ethnography, i. e. the recognition and interpretation of concerns of users, beneficiaries or citizens, and of the social and cultural context in which they live and evolve in order to design products and services that are meaningful, adequate, pertinent and of value
3. Creativity, i. e. the generation of new ideas leading to innovation and the development of skills that promote originality and quality in the creation process.
4. Management/entrepreneurship, i. e. the acquisition of knowledge and management skills required to stimulate entrepreneurship, business development and the promotion and development of new products and services.
5. Technical and professional knowledge, i. e. the acquisition of technical skills and scientific concepts (properties of materials, prototyping, adapted processing methods, manufacturing production, eco-design) and the methods of representation and visual communication (CAD software, drawings) required for the practice of design.
The candidate must demonstrate competence and experience in one of the program’s fields of specialization, as well as proven research interest in any of the relevant areas of knowledge. He or she will be required to develop a research program and apply for grants to address issues and insights that will allow the School of Design to stand out as a leader in the broader field of design culture.
• A candidate profile is particularly sought after to complement the existing team: in the foundations of design and visual and formal language (basic design) integrating theoretical and practical knowledge in brand image, semantics and aesthetic analysis of products and in the process of creations and creativity. A strong proven background in freehand drawing skills, expertise and theory, as well as representation tools such as 2D virtual representations and 3D modelling would constitute an asset as well as knowledge of manufacturing processes.
Applications more oriented towards manufacturing technologies (3D printing, ubiquitous objects) may also be considered.
