Dear Lesley-Ann,
Please accept my apologies for the terseness of my previous message.
You wrote about what has the potential to be a lively, interesting and disruptive track in DRS 2018 'Not just from the centre - multiple voices in design'. It is interesting especially because it offers the potential to include many voices on design research currently overlooked or looked down on in some mainstream design research institutions.
Your wrote, 'The aim of the track is to debate:
- Local or regional design for a diverse and ecologically sound future;
- Design history and case studies on culturally-situated design practice
or education;
- Local values, traditions, practices and mindsets as influence of
design solutions and education;
- Culturally-situated practice as design confidence;
- Happiness and emotional intelligence as a key factor for well-being in
an inclusive society;
- Design practice, research and education “behind the curtain” or “in
the margins”.'
I was asking for clarification as to whether such multiple voices in design might also include the technical design disciplines that address such realms, particularly those design research disciplines with a deep dependence on mathematics.
There are multiple, and often very challenging, 'voices' in technical design research disciplines (think for example the research debates about the mathematics of algorithms that are currently shaping multiple aspects of the designed and designer worlds) that I wondered might fit with your overall description of your track.
Best wishes,,
Terry

Subject: DRS 2018: "Not just from the centre - multiple voices in design"
Dear fellow designers and educators,
The deadline for the DRS 2018 is approaching pretty quickly, but my colleagues, Aija Freimane <https://www.linkedin.com/in/aija-freimane-79672618/>, Renata Marques <https://www.linkedin.com/in/renata-marques-leitao-39991717/>Leitao
<https://www.linkedin.com/in/renata-marques-leitao-39991717/>, and I hope you will consider doing a paper for our track called 'Not just from the centre - multiple voices in design' at the upcoming Design Research Society Conference 2018 in Ireland, especially if you practice design or do design research outside of Western Europe or the United States.
The aim of the track is to debate:
- the perspectives and solutions of designers from the ‘emerging'
design societies
for their local communities and economies;
- the fact that lack of resources can trigger creativity, innovation and
solutions;
- local values, traditions, practices and mindsets as catalysts for
design solutions towards changing economic and social environment;
- design for happiness and emotional intelligence as an inclusive
resource for a new form of well-being and welfare.
The track welcomes contributions around the broad theme of design research, education and practice from outside of the 'centre'.
The topics include but are not limited to:
- Local or regional design for a diverse and ecologically sound future;
- Design history and case studies on culturally-situated design practice
or education;
- Local values, traditions, practices and mindsets as influence of
design solutions and education;
- Culturally-situated practice as design confidence;
- Happiness and emotional intelligence as a key factor for well-being in
an inclusive society;
- Design practice, research and education “behind the curtain” or “in
the margins”.
The deadline for papers is 6th Nov 2017.
Our call is available at: http://drs2018limerick.org/track/not-just-centre-
