I disagree, with this viewpoint Mike. It depends very much on how the viva is conducted, which is why we ensure the chair is trained to conduct the meeting fairly and as far as possible be supportive of the student. If the student can defend their work, following the best traditions of academic practice, then they are found not guilty.
