Dear Pierre,
For rich discussions of the everyday, I’d suggest looking at Erving Goffman’s work. Goffman’s micro-sociology includes the well known book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, along with other works such as Frame Analysis.
Three other thinkers whose work applies in significant ways to the everyday are George Herbert Mead, Peter Berger, and Wilhelm Dilthey.
George Herbert Mead was a philosopher and one of the founders of pragmatism. His work laid the ground for symbolic interactionism. Mead’s work was overlooked for many years, but his significance is once again visible. His books and articles are once again easy to find, along with studies on his work by Hans Joas and others.
Peter Berger is well known for his work with Thomas Luckmann, The Social Construction of Reality. Several of Berger’s other works — among them, The Sacred Canopy — address the question of how we give meaning to life in its daily context, that is, the everyday.
Wilhelm Dilthey is one of the key figures in modern hermeneutics. His books investigate the foundation of the lifeworld. This is the frame within which we understand the everyday.
If I may make a suggestion, it would be very helpful if you would organize all the suggestions into a bibliography and post them back to the list. There have been many contributions to this thread. You may also have received suggestions off-list from people who did not post. It would be useful to have them all in a well structured document.
Best regards,
Ken
