Hi Don,
I didn't envisaged you in this case. I envisage a particular professional community. I also didn't expected you might be upset by the phrase (not term) swarm intelligence. I used it to augment a message. Nothing more. Maybe the computer guys and the neuroscientists tick me from time to time.
I also have a very different approach to unveiling user needs -- using social science methods. I have nothing against using folk wisdom. We need to use everything that brings results.
I also think a bit differently. Instead of talking about creativity and inspiration, I talk about methodology. Not everything can be methodologized, but we should try. You mentioned that people have to try new ways. This is one new way that no one wants to hear about. People prefer things that are effective, that sound dramatic, and bring hype.
Long ago my former boss started developing a field that he called general theory of artification. Basically, this was going to be a general theory of design. One subset of this field was going to be design methodology as a system of methods that will allow to solve any artification problem in a predictable and efficient way. (Well, to the level that we can do that in our times.) He spend a lot of time, but didn't have luck and could not obtain the recourses to finish this work. I think this affected his life tremendously. This is one example of getting into something completely new and unorthodox. There is more risk than in real estate development:)
In general, we think in the same realm, but have our own idiosyncrasies due to our different histories. This is natural. And the differences only help to have a second look, a look from outside, a reflection that helps us find out better where we are and where are we going. I appreciate sharing your ideas.
With kind regards,
Lubomir

computer guys? You mean Eric von Hippel? or me?
Neither of us consider ourselves to be computer guys. We use our observations -- and the workarounds that ordinary people create to solve their needs -- as inspiration for the kinds of issues they face and that need solution.
From there, it is good old-fashioned creativity that is required. We will always need creative designers, creative people: The reliance on observations, mining the wisdom of others, (what you incorrectly call "swarm intelligence") is a powerful way to discover hidden needs.
(Swarm intelligence refers to a completely different concept. One that was not in my discussion.)
