The School of Arts, Design and Architecture (ARTS) is an institution of higher education for design, media, architecture, motion picture, art education and art. The current key areas of research are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, welfare architecture and emerging technologies as well as urban planning and design. The school produces specialists and innovators of art, design and architecture with strong artistic and technical skills.
Department of Design is an academic community of approximately 850 students, 70 doctoral students and 70 faculty members. The department conducts research and provides education in bachelor, master and doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes. The Department of Design invites applications for:
PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE IN SERVICE DESIGN
The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 3-year term with the title of Professor of Practice. The position is intended to be full-time, but part-time contract can also be considered. The position will commence on the October 1st 2017, or as agreed.
Job description
Service design is a fast growing sector in design. The transition towards human-centred digital services in public and private sector is significant for national and global wellbeing and competiveness. Human-centred and collaborative design is a key research area in the Department of Design at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture with consistent international visibility and recognition. Digital society and design competence are also in the core of Aalto strategy. In order to strengthen this competence in the rapidly evolving digital service design Aalto ARTS has opened a call to find a Professor of Practice in Service Design.
The university is looking for a person who excels in the field of service design. Professor of Practice in Service Design has a vision how to update design to meet the complex demands of today and the future. The professor elevates and redefines the field of human-centred digital service design by developing teaching and professional activities and establishing collaborations between university, public and private as well as design practice. The professor broadens the active collaboration with stakeholders within Aalto University.
Professor of Practice in Service design exercises and leads digital service development, plans, leads and provides education, engages in the local and international university, industry, public sector activities in human-centred design of digital services, and participates in service to the Aalto University community and supports the university's internal service development.
Requirements
Professor of Practice position is subject to external evaluation. A successful applicant is expected to have a doctoral degree or comparable artistic qualifications, significant record of achievements in the field of service design, strong experience in digital service design practices and leadership experience in the field of design. The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas:
· merits and achievements in design practice, artistic production and/or research publications,
· teaching experience and achievements,
· cross-disciplinary collaborative and leadership skills, and
· activity in the design and/or academic community.
Salary
Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.

The application process includes two phases. In the first phase the applicants are required to submit the following material:
1. Motivation letter
2. Curriculum vitae, max 5 pages, including a list of publications
3. Portfolio including 5 most significant design projects or publications in a PDF form (max. file size 100 MB)
4. Statement describing the applicant´s vision of service design field and teaching (max 2 pages)
All application materials should be submitted in English. Aalto University does not accept any letters of recommendations during the application process.
Aalto University may perform a publication data analysis of the applicants' scientific publications based on the applicant's CV and list of publications unless the applicant declines the analysis. This information is used to measure scientific activity and it will be collected and analyzed based on information available on public databases.
From amongst the applicants in the first phase, Aalto University will select those who will be asked to supplement their application materials with e.g. a teaching portfolio, and to visit the School of Arts, Design and Architecture on June 9th 2017. Supplemented applications are submitted for review by external experts (the second phase of the application process).
