medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Genevra,

Regarding the Jewish catacombs, I saw a piece of information in a very recent Forbes article that might be relevant to your issue:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/drsarahbond/2017/03/24/archaeologists-discover-one-of-romes-lost-jewish-cemeteries/#57ffe63347c2

It is said that "Notably, the only U.S. organization that facilitates visits to the Jewish catacombs within the city of Rome is the International Catacomb Society."
Here is the website of this organization:

http://www.catacombsociety.org/jewish-catacombs/

If you reach out to them, maybe you'll find some help?

Best of luck,
Marjorie

Last time I visited the Vatican Library,. I had a letter from the American Academy plus my Rutgers ID. The letter helped. An official letter like that might be useful with other institutions.

Anything official-looking helps too. A business card, something showing membership of an institution. And always, your passport.

Good luck!

Thanks, Laura and Sharon!
I cancelled my fax account when I got too much spam, but perhaps I'll re-up for the short term. And Sharon, if I can't get answers before I go, I'll try your method. If I start on the day set aside for jet lag, I won't even lose time.
best,
Genevra

I will second Laura's advice. The current thing seems to be to show up at the place. Then an employee will call the person who should be staffing the position, but who is "sick" that day. Then, you call the "sick" person the next day and he/she will tell you to send an email to him/her and that he/she will forward to person who will make entry happen. I just got back from Rome and this happened to me twice in as many days with exactly the same procedure.
Best,
Sharon

Yours is a very common problem! I've been told (by Italians) that emails are fairly routinely ignored in some places and that faxes stand a better chance. Leaving yourself enough time to turn up at someone's office and be insistent/pathetic/immovable sometimes works too, but it's not always an option

Good luck,

Laura

Thanks, Jim.
Having had no previous contact with either institution, I did not think of them. I'll give them a try.

Genevra

Hello Genevra,

I was in Rome a long while back, staying at the British School in Rome, who have great experience at getting such permissions. And there are other such institutions there. Have you contacted the American Academy in Rome? Part of their mandate, I believe, is to help scholars with their research projects in Rome.

I hope it all works out for you.

Cheers,

Jim

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture apologies for cross-posting

Dear colleagues,

I will be in Rome in early May, for both research and photography, and have run into some difficulties getting the permission that I need. It appears that I have to contact MiBAC, the Ministero dei beni e delle attività culturali e del turismo. Can anyone help?

1. Museo Nazionale dell'Alto Medioevo: I need research access to sixth-century material, two beads/spindle whorls from Nocera Umbra and a pendant from Castel Trosino. In 2008 I corresponded with the museum director about these objects, but she is no longer there, and email to her is apparently not forwarded to anyone. The only addresses I find now are at MiBAC: <[log in to unmask]><mailto:[log in to unmask]> and <[log in to unmask]><mailto:[log in to unmask]>. I have written to both addresses: in English on Feb. 15, in bad Italian on Feb. 28, and in good Italian (with help) on March 13. No one has responded. Is there an actual person to ask?

2. I need to photograph the Villa Torlonia Jewish catacomb. It is closed to the public, but material online suggests that it is possible to see by appointment. I have read that one needs to get permission from the Soprintendenza Speciale per il Colosseo e l’Area archeologica centrale di Roma. Their web site gives no information about this particular catacomb. The address given elsewhere is <[log in to unmask]><mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Since I am still waiting for a response from them about the Museo dell'Alto Medioevo, there seems little point in writing to them about this. I am hoping to get the name and address of a real person.

Any advice will be welcome!
Genevra
