Thank you for the invitation to join this particular thread. I was hoping for a way in. Reading what you’ve said here reminds me of when I first joined this list—when I had not yet defended, and it wasn’t clear to me if I could or should be a part of the conversation, I’d say I exemplified one subset of the oppressed. When others questioned whether or not I should speak or if I should just listen, Ken made it clear that my voice was worth hearing. He defended someone he did not know, a woman who was still ABD to other people on the list who weren’t as sure about me. And that has made a big difference in my life.
I wouldn’t blame anyone now for thinking that I should listen and not speak because while a long time member, I do not contribute often. I know I need to change that. But with all my failings, I do know a little bit about making a good case, because my background while in design, equally embraces rhetoric, which when studied, shows why it is at the heart of discourse that represents our better angels rather than our worst. And from my vantage point, Ken only asks that ideas include reasons and evidence in order to find their best expression. As I see it, this is not oppressive, ti’s convincing. Do that, and you will have made a good case. Good cases persuade others which I think is what those claiming oppression would want to do.

Being the Dean at the time, he didn’t need to spend the time he barely had to guide me or to mentor me – nevertheless he did, and he did that selflessly. He did that for many others who worked there as well, and I have witnessed many careers flourishing with his support. After few years I moved to work at another university, yet Ken continued to provide me with his mentorship wholeheartedly and he was always available to help me when I needed it.

Over the many years I have had the pleasure of knowing him, I have seen how he has helped many people – regardless of their age, status, their gender, or race. Many of these people are members of this list and I hope that they will speak out as well.
