CILIP has confirmed that Dr Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress, will be the first keynote speaker at the CILIP Conference next year (5-6 July, Manchester).
Dr Hayden is the first ever African American and first female to be appointed to the role at the Library of Congress, which holds more than 162 million items, including many unique items from America's history. She is keen to make those resources more easily available and connect with people outside of the limits of Washington, bringing benefits to citizens across the US.
A trained librarian, and only the third to head up the Library of Congress in its 216 year history, Dr Hayden has held numerous high profile information roles and recently oversaw a $112 million restoration of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. She also served as President of the American Library Association in 2002-2003.
Speaking about the CILIP Conference, Dr Hayden said, "This is an amazing opportunity to connect with library professionals around the globe to generate ideas and build relationships. When librarians get together something great happens. So I'm looking forward to attending the CILIP Conference in Manchester."
The CILIP Conference will bring together hundreds of library, information and knowledge professionals to better understand, discuss and share insight into the key issues that affect our sector. The 2017 conference sees the introduction of a Future Trends strand aimed at Heads of Service, Senior Managers and Decision Makers. It will focus on the key changes we face in the future, how they will impact us and what we can do to prepare and influence the outcome. We will also introduce a range of workshops which will be run by experts in a specific field, designed to encourage discussion, knowledge sharing and cross-sectorial learning, with the aim of leaving you with the practical skills and knowledge to positively influence the future.
Early bird registration is now open - http://bit.ly/AC17j1 - with further discounts for CILIP Members.
Call for Papers is also open. Full details on how to submit a paper are available on the conference website. The deadline for applications is 10 February 2017.
