"when I was a lad" - did a surgical house job which also covered thyroid surgeon - he routinely had thyroidectomy patients infused with methylene blue a fixed time before op started so that the parathyroids would be glowing at the time he got to the point he wanted to see them - catheterised patients always had a spectrum of blue/green catheter bags following surgery!
........................by the time he took mine out he had had enough practice and didn't need it - the evidence being that I must have at least one parathyroid surviving in my sternomastoids!
