LAUNCH OF THE SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF COLLECTING
We would like to invite you to the launch of the Society of the History of
Collecting and its website. Tim Knox, Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum,
will give an inaugural talk on Two Regency Collectors: Richard 7th Viscount
Fitzwilliam of Merrion and Sir John Soane. This will be followed by a
meeting for members of the society, reception and optional dinner. The event
will take place on 9 September at 5.30 at the Wallace Collection.
As you may have already heard, the Society for the History of Collecting was
formed last year with the purpose of bringing together scholars from diverse
disciplines who are interested in every aspect of collecting studies. As the
study of collecting crosses so many different disciplines, it was felt that
a society would be useful in bringing scholars together both virtually and
in reality. The Society aims to advance the study of the history of
collecting in three different ways: by encouraging the exchange of ideas by
supporting scholarship in the field and by protecting important archives and
sources.
To this end we have set up a website
https://societyhistorycollecting.wordpress.com which is available to anyone,
whether they are a member of the society or not. For members only, we offer
the opportunity to take part in study visits and workshops. These will take
place throughout the year and in different centres, beginning with a
calendar of events in London for 2016-7.
After the talk by Tim Knox, to which you are invited whether you are
interested in the Society or not, we will hold a general meeting to discuss
the formation of the society. All members are invited and encouraged to come
whether you join before or on the evening. This will be followed by a
reception until 8pm. A dinner has been organised in the Wallace Collection
Restaurant to which everyone is welcome. While you do not need to book
places for the talk or reception, please notify us at [log in to unmask]
if you would like to join the dinner. (cost c £30).
