Dear Colleagues
After some searching, I found my off-list email to Luiza Prado, Mariam Asad, and Layal Shuman. Since Luiza has not posted the email to which she refers, I forward it to the list. It appears below this email. This had to do with a conversation that developed in the wake of a call for papers: “CfP: Social Justice Design CHI '16 workshop.” The public conversation is visible in PhD-Design list archives for December 2015.
I did **NOT** suggest that Luiza and the other women leave the list. I wrote: “My view is to go ahead and talk about these things on PhD-Design.”
I *also* informed Luiza that she and her colleagues might want to create an email list specifically focusing on design and social justice. The reason for the suggestion is that the PhD-Design list is broad and general. It is open for any topics a member wishes to raise.
Establishing a list also permits the list owners to set the rules. List owners can create a safe space.
PhD-Design is an open list. Any member is free to raise any question, and all members are free to debate. A conversation focused primarily on design and social justice may require a platform of its own. Luiza and her colleagues have now created the Decolonizing Design platform.
I did not send Luiza an email urging her to go elsewhere. I asked her to remain. I suggested that she might want to create another list for specific purposes while continuing to make her case here.
This is the relevant passage:

> My view is to go ahead and talk about these things on PhD-Design.

> João asks questions. In my view, that does not make the list less safe. He’s probably asking some of the same things many people are thinking — this offers an important opportunity for you to state the case for this workshop and for the concerns you raise.

My full off-list email appears below. I respect Luiza’s right to make her case. I urged her to do so.
It is wrong to accuse me of suggesting that Luiza and her colleagues leave the list.
