Dear all,
Thank you for an interesting discussion
Just a couple of comments.
First, Luiza wrote,
'There is a vast amount of literature which dissects why and how colonialism has been pivotal in articulating what is deemed as valid knowledge'
Perhaps what is needed is a clarification on which nation states are regarded as colonised and which as colonised, and more importantly explaining WHY and HOW the choices about who is coloniser and who is colonised are made.
For example, the UK is one of the most colonised countries in the world over millennia, and its time and effects as a coloniser are relatively short (and you could see, in design terms, that the consequenbces of its colonising are mostly due to influences on it by its colonisers).
Turkey and the Islamic empires were more extensive timewise in Europe and Africa. And if George Friedman is correct in his predictions Turkey just about to start back on its colonising path (Friedman, G. (2009) The Next 100 Years. Austin: Stratfor)
America is a colonised country and a coloniser itself only in a relatively short term. Again if George Friedman is correct, Mexico will become the coloniser of the USA in around 50 years time.
In South America, the longer term colonisations were by other South American polities.
In India, the significant colonisations that shaped India were from Persia and elsewhere, long before the British, Portuguese and French
There is a sense of post-colonial analysis being restricted to the recent. In that case, it feels and looks more like a complaint rather than a means of decolonising the theories and ideas.
Second, the idea that '...there is no other...' is very different from and unconnected with the idea that 'all people are equal'.
Best wishes,
Terry
