I'm not so sure about that. The great majority of people I discussed it
with really "didn't have a clue", but nevertheless (and perhaps
irrationally) nearly all felt that the issue was so important that they
"ought to vote", despite not really knowing which way to vote - under such
circumstances, their voting would presumably have been little more than
'random'.
I was personally a little less irrational. I accepted that there were
credible arguments on both sides, and really "didn't have a clue" as to
which outcome would be in the better long-term interests of the
UK. However, I felt that (almost by definition) there were more
uncertainties associated with Leaving than with Remaining, so I voted
'Remain' on the basis of it being "the devil we know'.
As I said, a lot of this speculation would be unnecessary had there been a
"don't know" option on the ballot paper.
One interesting point is that virtually no-one I have spoken to, or heard
from, subsequently (including pro-Leave folk) actually thought that there
was going to be a 'Leave' result; I'm not sure what that means, or what it
would mean in terms of voting if the referendum were to be re-run tomorrow.
Kind Regards,
John
